From its beginnings in 1906 to its prominent position in the contemporary global real estate landscape,
the Coldwell Banker story is an epic tale of ingenuity, vision and innovation.

1906

A Date with History

The history of Coldwell Banker is intimately linked to the vicissitudes of History itself. In 1906, an earthquake and a great fire destroyed 80% of the city of San Francisco, the 6th largest city in the United States of America. Fraudsters posing as real estate agents took advantage of the victims' vulnerability.

Two men, Colbert Coldwell (23) and Arthur Benjamin Banker (28), wanted to contribute to the city's reconstruction and, above all, to restore ethics, integrity and commitment to the real estate profession. They laid the foundations of a company that would play a crucial role in revitalising the city and rebuilding its neighbourhoods.

1920

The Californian Dream

Under the impetus of Benjamin Arthur Banker, Coldwell Banker opened several real estate agencies in Los Angeles, a city already synonymous with wealth and luxury, home to film moguls, prosperous businessmen and celebrities who had taken up residence in its luxurious properties. The company established itself on the West Coast of the United States as a benchmark in the luxury real estate market through its commitment to excellence in customer service and unparalleled expertise. Over the years, Coldwell Banker expanded its reach across the United States, climbing the ranks to become one of the most prominent real estate companies in the country.

1933

Silver Screen, Golden Opportunity

In 1933, while cinema was captivating audiences with its flamboyant epics and enchanting romances, Coldwell Banker, always at the forefront of innovation, found an unprecedented way to reach a captive audience through the movie theatres. By harnessing the power of cinema's fascination, it was from a screening room on Madison Avenue in Manhattan that Coldwell Banker reached a wider audience than ever before, generating increased interest in its luxury properties and reinforcing its position as an industry leader. This bold foray into the world of cinema illustrates the ingenuity and vision of Coldwell Banker, which has always known how to innovate to connect with the most discerning clients in an unprecedented and memorable way.

1950

The Era of Expansion and Innovation

The 1950s saw Coldwell Banker thrive across America, capitalising on the post-war boom and economic growth. It was a decade of transformation and innovation for the company. Then in 1959, always at the forefront of technological innovation, Coldwell Banker launched its first computerised property management system, paving the way for greater efficiency and smoother real estate transactions.

1960

From Residential to Commercial Real Estate

In 1965, Coldwell Banker broadened its activities by venturing into commercial property management, offering its clients an extended range of services and reinforcing its position as a provider of integrated real estate services. Then in 1967, the company intensified its commitment to the communities it serves by launching corporate social responsibility initiatives, supporting local and national charities and strengthening its ties with the communities where it operates.

1970-1990

The American Dream

The 1970s ushered in a new era for Coldwell Banker as it expanded its horizons into property management and commercial real estate consulting. The company continued its development by acquiring firms in Atlanta, Chicago and Washington. In 1981, the company merged with Sears, Roebuck & Co., an alliance that catalysed its national expansion. Coldwell Banker then became a household name across the entire country.

1998

A Date with the World

1998 was a very special year in the history of Coldwell Banker, marking the dawn of its global deployment with the opening of its first international office in Toronto, Canada. This date marked the beginning of a worldwide expansion that would shape its destiny. That same year, and in line with its philosophy of constant innovation in the service of clients, Coldwell Banker became the very first luxury real estate company to launch its website.
